How Do I Create a Timeless Kitchen?

Any major remodel can feel daunting, but few more so than the kitchen. Not only are kitchen renovations a big financial investment, but they also drastically impact your daily routine throughout. As the command center and gathering space, kitchens are the anchor of the home. Nailing the right design for your lifestyle is essential – a do-over isn’t an option.

With so many trends and styles to choose from, how do you create a kitchen that stands the test of time? At Knight Remodeling, our experienced team knows how to design spaces that outlast fads and meet your needs. Want a brief overview of our best advice? Read on below for our tips on creating a timeless kitchen design!

Consider the Work Triangle

The kitchen is one of the hardest-working rooms in your home, so it’s essential that it’s as functional as possible—and it all starts with the layout. When designing your kitchen, consider the kitchen triangle, which consists of the oven, fridge, and sink. These elements create the base from which the rest of your kitchen flows and set up your workflow for success.

Think Longevity Over Trends

It’s easy to get caught up in trends; they’re flashy and fun. Designing a timeless kitchen means making selections you’ll like today and in years to come. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t still have fun! There are countless ways to add a new twist to timeless design elements, like installing classic white subway tile in a herringbone pattern.

Choose High-Quality Materials

Investing in products that last is important when selecting cabinetry, countertops, hardware, and appliances. For example, custom cabinets are typically constructed with higher-quality materials and better craftsmanship than prefabricated options. On that same note, quartz is an excellent choice for countertops because it looks good and can withstand daily kitchen wear and tear. Investing in high-quality materials sometimes comes with a higher cost upfront but will save you from replacing items in the long run.

Embrace Design Personality

Just because a space is timeless doesn’t mean it has to be boring! There are many ways to infuse personality and character into your kitchen, including tilework, lighting, hardware, finishes, and decor. From splashes of bold color to unique patterns to bespoke materials to treasured heirlooms, these finishing touches are where your style can truly sing!

Leave Room for Adjustments

When you take the time to lay a solid design foundation, updating your home only requires style adjustments versus a full-scale renovation. Refreshing a timeless space is as simple as swapping out artwork, seating, textiles, and other decorative pieces. Few people’s tastes stay the same forever; leave room to play, try something new, and let your kitchen change with you.

The client’s goal for this renovation was to update the home with modern amenities while preserving its 1930s charm. To create more space, we built an addition, which allowed for a new staircase, garage, and mudroom.

The main floor features a beautiful new kitchen with an open floor plan, a center island, and incredible built-ins. All-new hardwood floors, windows, trim, cabinets, tile, and fireplaces continue throughout the bright main level.

Moving upstairs, the bedrooms were reconfigured to accommodate larger closets, including a walk-in closet in the primary suite. Outside, a new portico ups the exterior’s curb appeal!

Sophisticated Traditional Home Remodel

Today, we are so excited to share this refined traditional home remodel. These lovely homeowners are repeat clients (we previously renovated their owner’s suite bathroom), and it was a pleasure to help them update their Mendota Heights main level.

This classic home was charming, but the dark wood and furnishings looked dated. Our first move was to expand the kitchen and mudroom with an addition. From there, we brightened up the entire main level with fresh paint. The refinished molding, staircase railing, and ceiling panels completely transform the space – it feels like a new home!

We mixed crisp white tones, plaid patterns, and warm natural wood with black and silver metallics to carry out the client’s timeless style. One of our favorite spaces on the main floor is the sophisticated study with its bold blue paint, bookcase built-ins, and fun pocket doors.

5 Tips to Enhance Your Home’s Curb Appeal

Share

Are you searching for ways to enhance your home’s curb appeal? The exterior is a vital part of your home, setting the stage for what’s inside. Whether you’re looking for easy ideas to tweak your home’s curb appeal or are planning a complete renovation, we’ve got you covered! Keep reading for five tips to enhance and invest in your home’s curb appeal.

Invest in Landscaping

Landscaping is an essential piece of your home’s exterior. Not only does landscaping add natural beauty to your property, but it can also increase privacy, protect your home from flooding, and help sustain native pollinators. Plants and flowers are great for drawing the eye to key visual points such as windows and doors or frame walkways, porches, and driveways. Once your landscaping is in place, it’s important to maintain it. Consistent upkeep will keep it from becoming a bigger project down the road!

Create a Welcoming Porch

In addition to being clean and well-maintained, your home should look warm and welcoming. Inviting visitors into your home begins with your front porch; add decor like flower pots, a welcome sign, or cozy seating. Another option is adding a wreath to your front door, which you can simply swap out the wreath as the seasons change!

Make Your Entry Pop

Painting your home’s front door is a growing DIY trend. It’s a great way to add a pop of unexpected color and put a little personality into your home’s exterior. Plus, it’s a relatively easy and cost-effective way to enhance your home’s curb appeal! Choose a bold color that complements the exterior elements of your home. However, experiment with a few swatches before committing to ensure your chosen color doesn’t clash.

Let There Be Light

Nothing is inviting about a dark or shadowy entryway; ensuring your home’s lighting is in good working condition is key to enhancing your home’s curb appeal and increasing safety. The easiest solution to make your home appear bright and clean is to replace burnt-out bulbs promptly. However, updating your home’s exterior lighting is a wonderful way to give your home a fresh look.

Keep Up with Maintenance

No one wants to have the least appealing house on the block! Keeping up with exterior maintenance is an important part of enhancing your home’s curb appeal. From lawn care to chipped paint, taking care of your home keeps it looking well-maintained and can also ward off costly repairs. Here are a few tasks to ensure your exterior looks great: clean gutters, wash windows, keep up with repairs, touch-up paint, and remove yard debris.
