6 Exterior Home Update Ideas

Share

We’ve made it through April showers and May flowers; June is here, and summer has finally begun! Besides relaxed routines, family vacations, and lake days, summer is also a time for exterior home updates. Whether you’re looking to add curb appeal, create spaces for outdoor hosting, increase resale value, or update your home’s style this summer, our team is here to help. Read on below for 6 exterior home update ideas!

Outdoor Hosting

Summer in the Twin Cities is all about enjoying the great outdoors. When the majority of the year is snowy and cold, you live it up when the sun shines! Hosting in the backyard is one of summer’s great joys; whether it’s grilling dinner on the deck, watching the sunset from the porch swing, or unwinding with friends around the bonfire. We’ll help you create your outdoor oasis, from patios to screened porches to outdoor kitchens!

Landscaping

Everything looks better with plants – lush landscaping is key to improving any home’s curb appeal! Not only do trees and plants positively impact the environment, but they also bring visual interest through color, texture, and pattern. Additionally, gardening is a lifelong hobby that keeps you moving outside while bettering your home. One of our favorite current landscaping trends is native pollinator gardens, which cater to bees, butterflies, and birds by offering the flowering plants that provide pollen and shelter.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance is a crucial piece of the home improvement puzzle. An exterior in disrepair sends a lasting message, one that guests often carry into their impression of your home’s interior. Keeping your siding, roof, gutters, sidewalks, and driveway in good shape keeps your home safe and in working order. Consistent home maintenance is an investment in your property that always pays off in the long run.

Universal Design

Emphasizing safety and accessibility above all else, universal design fosters environments that can be used by the broadest range of people, regardless of their age, size, ability, or disability. In particular, if aging in place is part of your long-term plan, then universal design will serve you well. Countless improvements increase your home’s accessibility, from clear pathways to motion-activated lights to entry ramps and railings.

Energy Efficiency

When it comes to keeping your home in working order, energy efficiency is a game-changer. Building design and technology have come a long way in recent decades; investing in new windows, doors, siding, or roofing can drastically improve energy costs. Lowering monthly bills makes a difference to anyone’s budget, but exterior updates also boost curb appeal and keep your home feeling comfortable no matter the temps outside.

Fresh Style

We’ve talked a lot about practical repairs throughout this blog, but sometimes our clients want to refresh their home’s style. Never discount the impact of a fresh coat of paint, new shutters, updated house numbers, a new mailbox, or a different garage door style. Are you stuck on what changes to make or need help discerning your style? That’s where our team of experienced professionals will guide you seamlessly through the design process.

How Do You Balance Two Bathroom Remodel Styles?

Every remodel has a different goal. With our bathroom remodeling services, it’s not always about starting from scratch, but rather it’s about making thoughtful updates that elevate what’s already there. That was the case with this recent bathroom remodel, where we reimagined two bathrooms with distinct approaches: one full transformation, one strategic refresh.

So how do you balance two bathroom styles? One of the best ways is to start with clear, intentional bathroom remodeling ideas that consider both form and function.  It comes down to understanding the purpose of each space and creating continuity through shared materials, finishes, and design intent. In this home, each bathroom serves a different function, but both now feel cohesive thanks to custom details, smart updates, and a unified aesthetic.

In the first bathroom remodel, we kept the existing shower but replaced the cracked floor tile, added custom Rift Sawn White Oak cabinetry with reeded panels, and installed new fixtures. The result? A cleaner, more modern space that feels warm, inviting, and effortlessly functional. It’s a great example of how small upgrades can completely change the feel of a room.

The second bathroom underwent a full remodel. We kept the original layout but introduced new materials, smart storage solutions, and updated finishes to bring fresh energy to the space. Together both bathrooms now reflect the same refined and functional design sensibility, showcasing our bathroom remodeling services tailored to the home’s character.

Let’s Bring Your Bathroom Vision to Life

At Knight Construction Design, our bathroom remodeling services are built around your needs, whether you’re starting fresh or updating what’s already there. From creative bathroom remodeling ideas like rethinking layout and lighting to adding custom cabinetry, heated floors, or steam showers, we design bathrooms that are as functional as they are beautiful. Interior Home Remodeling for a 1930s Home in Wayzata

Preserving the charm of a 1930s home while integrating modern amenities is no easy task, but we were excited to work on this interior home remodeling project in Wayzata. Utilizing our interior design services, our goal was to create a perfect balance of character and contemporary living while ensuring every detail flowed beautifully throughout the home.

Enhancing Curb Appeal with an Exterior Update

The exterior of this Wayzata home was beautifully updated with siding in a rich, modern color, and windows that fill the home with natural light, which has created a welcoming new entryway. One of our favorite updates is the enclosed transition from the house to the new garage – it adds both charm and practicality.

Creating Warm and Inviting Interiors with Modern Enhancements

Inside, we focused on blending modern comforts with historic details through our expert interior home remodeling and interior design services. The new hardwood floors brought warmth and depth to every room, while the rebuilt staircases offer both style and current code compliance. A new mudroom and enclosed spaces add function while maintaining the home’s original charm. Every window, trim, and detail was carefully considered to create a space that feels both fresh and timeless.

The kitchen remodeling included new cabinets, countertops, and tile that feel both sophisticated and welcoming. We introduced fresh fixtures and finishes for a timeless look in the bathroom remodeling portion of the project. The upper-level rooms were also remodeled to include larger closets, with a spacious walk-in closet in the master bedroom.

Ready to Start Your Remodeling Journey?

Every element of this whole home renovation in Wayzata was completed with care and attention to detail. How Do I Create a Timeless Kitchen?

Any major remodel can feel daunting, but few more so than the kitchen. Not only are kitchen renovations a big financial investment, but they also drastically impact your daily routine throughout. As the command center and gathering space, kitchens are the anchor of the home. Nailing the right design for your lifestyle is essential – a do-over isn’t an option.

With so many trends and styles to choose from, how do you create a kitchen that stands the test of time? At Knight Remodeling, our experienced team knows how to design spaces that outlast fads and meet your needs. Want a brief overview of our best advice? Read on below for our tips on creating a timeless kitchen design!

Consider the Work Triangle

The kitchen is one of the hardest-working rooms in your home, so it’s essential that it’s as functional as possible—and it all starts with the layout. When designing your kitchen, consider the kitchen triangle, which consists of the oven, fridge, and sink. These elements create the base from which the rest of your kitchen flows and set up your workflow for success.

Think Longevity Over Trends

It’s easy to get caught up in trends; they’re flashy and fun. Designing a timeless kitchen means making selections you’ll like today and in years to come. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t still have fun! There are countless ways to add a new twist to timeless design elements, like installing classic white subway tile in a herringbone pattern.

Choose High-Quality Materials

Investing in products that last is important when selecting cabinetry, countertops, hardware, and appliances. For example, custom cabinets are typically constructed with higher-quality materials and better craftsmanship than prefabricated options. On that same note, quartz is an excellent choice for countertops because it looks good and can withstand daily kitchen wear and tear. Investing in high-quality materials sometimes comes with a higher cost upfront but will save you from replacing items in the long run.

Embrace Design Personality

Just because a space is timeless doesn’t mean it has to be boring! There are many ways to infuse personality and character into your kitchen, including tilework, lighting, hardware, finishes, and decor. From splashes of bold color to unique patterns to bespoke materials to treasured heirlooms, these finishing touches are where your style can truly sing!

Leave Room for Adjustments

When you take the time to lay a solid design foundation, updating your home only requires style adjustments versus a full-scale renovation. Refreshing a timeless space is as simple as swapping out artwork, seating, textiles, and other decorative pieces. Few people’s tastes stay the same forever; leave room to play, try something new, and let your kitchen change with you.
